CUMBERLAND — Top-ranked and undefeated Fort Hill put up 21 in the first quarter and 21 in the second in coasting to its seventh straight victory, 42-6 over Southern, Saturday afternoon at Greenway Avenue Stadium.

The game, which was to originally begin at 3 p.m. kicked off at 3:58 p.m. as the girls Homecoming soccer game between Allegany and Fort Hill, one of three Homecoming soccer games played at Greenway early Saturday, ended in a scoreless double-overtime tie. That did not prevent the Sentinels, though, from coming out sharp from the beginning in remaining undefeated.

Quarterback Hunter Squires had another big day, completing 6 out of 7 passes for 124 yards and two touchdowns, with Ty Johnson and Devin Shreve the receivers on the scores. Fullback Dekarai Darr again led Fort Hill in rushing with 112 yards on six carries, scoring once on a 55-yard run. Alex Barnes carried just three times, but scored two touchdowns, while Charlie Twigg scored the final Fort Hill touchdown. Johnson, Shreve and Squires intercepted passes for the Sentinels.

Southern (2-5) got on the board in the fourth quarter when Seth Kisner scored from a yard out.

Ryan Shives recovered a fumble at the Southern 15 to conclude the Rams’ first possession, with Barnes concluding the Sentinels’ first possession on a 15-yard touchdown run 48 seconds into the game. Chris King kicked the first of his six extra points to make it 7-0.

On Fort Hill’s second possession, Darr took the ball 19 yards on first down to set up a 48-yard touchdown pass to Johnson from Squires. King’s kick at 9:02 made it 14-0.

Southern then put together a good offensive possession, taking the ball to the Fort Hill 12, but on fourth-and-18 from the 20, a fade pass from Travis Newton to Reese Haskiell in the end zone was ruled out of bounds and Fort Hill took over at the 20.

An eight-play drive later, which included a 12-yard gain by Darr, a 21-yard completion from Squires to Barnes, a 19-yarder to Shreve and a 17-yard quarterback sneak by Squires, Shreve took in a five-yard pass from Squires for the touchdown at 2:40 of the first, with King’s kick making it 21-0.

After turnovers by both teams, Johnson followed his blocking perfectly for a 43-yard punt return to the Southern 30. After a Darr gain of 20, then a clipping penalty on Fort Hill, Darr took it to the Southern 2. On second-and-goal from the 1, Barnes took his second carry of the day in for his second touchdown of the day at 10:15 of the second quarter, with King making it 28-0.

Fort Hill scored on one play in its next possession when Darr took a draw up the middle then down the sideline for the 55-yard TD run at 8:08.

Two possessions later from the Southern 21, the Sentinels used gains by Jaraslov Candler, Quade Raley and quarterback Shreve to get the ball to the Southern 1 from where Charlie Twigg took it in over left tackle with 1:49 left in the half, with King’s kick making it 42-0 at the half.

Southern took advantage of a two-yard Fort Hill punt and put together a six-play, 46-yard scoring drive behind gains by Newton and Seth Kisner to pick up three first downs, with Newton producing a 17-yard gain and Kisner gaining seven from the Fort Hill 8. Kisner then took it into the end zone from the 1 with 6:25 left in the game. The Rams’ attempt for two points fell short.

Fort Hill will play Friday at Chestnut Ridge. Southern will play at Mountain Ridge.
